These one day workshops/training sessions offer low cost professional training for people wishing to increase their skills and knowledge in the area of youth psychology & communication.

Toolbox - ‘Survival Skills’ for working with young people - 10 March & 13 October. This workshop explores adolescent development and issues encountered when supporting young people including depression, self injury, suicidal ideation, substance use etc. Learn risk assessment and a range of communication skills & creative strategies to engage young people ‘at risk’ of harm.

Creative Toolbox - 14 April & 11 November. A one-day experiential workshop exploring creativity and demonstrating a range of activities that can be used to help and support people. Explore the role of creativity in problem solving and learning, self-esteem and identity, explore past, present and future using simple art based activities. Experience a range of ‘hands on’ tools useful as alternative means of communication, exploring and expressing feelings, techniques to share stories and ideas and much more.

Mental Health – Myths, Madness & Medicine - 12 May & 8 December. This one day workshop is suitable for anyone who wishes to better their understanding of mental illness including counsellors, teachers, carers, youth/community workers, volunteers, etc. Participants will learn about what defines mental illness, how diagnosis is made and will explore the presenting features and treatment approaches for a range of mental illnesses.

Brain Development and Psychopathology - 9 June. This one day course explores brain development. Recent brain imaging research suggests that the areas for reasoning, problem solving and risk assessment are the last to mature and this may play a role in why many adolescents are seen as impulsive, risk taking and lacking sensitivity for others (especially adults/parents!). Learn about how brain development influences risk taking behaviour, explore what defines Behaviour Disorders, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant and Conduct Disorder, Autism and Asperger’s syndrome and discuss implications for helping relationships.

Understanding Disruptive Behaviour Disorders - 14 July. Learn about behaviour disorders and challenging behaviour in young people. The impact of labels, diagnosis and current treatment and management options will be explored. Includes: ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asperger Syndrome, Personality Disorders & more.

What’s Your Poison? Understanding Substance use and abuse - 11 August. Learn about substance use and the effects of drugs and alcohol. Drug classification – stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, inhalants. Views of substance use legal/illicit, medicinal/recreational, addiction/ dependence, dual diagnosis/comorbidity. Explores current treatment options including drug substitution (methadone etc) detox/rehab, 12 step programs, harm reduction strategies and communication/counselling skills for working with substance users.

Random Acts of Counselling - 15 September. One day experiential workshop to learn and practice communication and counselling skills. Do you often find yourself listening to other people's problems? Does your role require you to assist people who are having difficulties? This workshop is suitable for anyone who wants to become a better listener and helper and provides an opportunity to learn and try out a range of communication and counselling skills designed to help others.

Fighting Fair – Mediation & Conflict Resolution Training
This interactive and stimulating 2 day course will assist professionals to explore conflict and impart the essential principles and process of mediation. The structured 5-step mediation model and specific conflict resolution skills will be presented and practiced. The course can be utilised in many different areas of conflict e.g. client work, workplace disputes and interpersonal conflict.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify factors contributing to possible causes of conflict and barriers to resolution
  • Identify the different levels of conflict and approaches to conflict situations
  • Identify the conditions under which mediation is an appropriate intervention and how it differs from the counselling process
  • Identify where mediation fits as an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process
  • Identify the skills, qualities and attitudes that a mediator requires
  • Identify the underlying concepts and principles of the mediation process
  • Identify and demonstrate an understanding of the 5-stage mediation model
  • Identify the various cultural considerations when mediating with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) or Indigenous communities / families
  • Identify and demonstrate characteristics of a mindful mediator

The training is endorsed by the Australian Association of Social Workers (24 CPE points) and the Australian Psychological Society (13 points).

  3. How to take action in your organisation and become more sustainable – exploring ways of reducing waste, water and energy use.

Managing Difficult Situations
This one-day workshop provides non-counsellors with basic skills to assist people dealing with problems or difficult situations. It introduces a variety of methods, from non-judgmental listening to referral to appropriate agencies. It also explores some of the personal issues participants may face when helping others.

This course is for people with no counselling experience, who find that, at times, they are required to deal with people in distress, or people with challenging behaviours.

Mental Health Connect - Mental Health Skills for Community Workers

  • As a community worker would you like to know more about mental health?

The Alliance has begun organizing the 7th National LGBTI Health Conference. Health in Difference is Australia's premier conference regarding the health and wellbeing of LGBTI people. It draws together community organisations, health practitioners, researchers, academics, policy makers, advocates, community members and others who are interested in improving the health and wellbeing of LGBTI people.

Health in Difference is a unique forum for those interested in health issues relating to sexuality, sex and gender diversity to gather and share knowledge, practice, research and advocacy concerns and strategies as well as to network, listen, learn and laugh.

Health in Difference 2010 aims to "do diversity", bringing together the rich diversity within "LGBTI communities", and others who work with them, proactively including the diversity of LGBTI issues, and using our collective insights to make a contribution to the health and wellbeing of sexuality, sex and gender diverse people.
